British Values in Football

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/apr/24/leicester-riyad-mahrez-pfa-player-of-the-year

Riyad Mahrez, Leicester City Forward, has won the PFA (Professional Football Association) player of the year 2016. Maharez has scored 17 goals and made 11 assists in 34 league games. He also plays for the Algerian national team.

Riyad says he would not have won the award without his team mates; "All the credit is for them, seriously. And my manager and the staff. Without them I wouldn't receive this award and I wouldn't score. It's the team spirit. I want to dedicate it to them."

Riyad is Arabic and was born in France. He is Muslim and married his English girlfriend in 2015.

Making sure there are no outsiders in schools

9 year old Gerald Hamilton started a new school and invited all 30 of his classmates to his birthday party, but no one attended. Gerald was born with a condition that requires operations on his skull and he has trouble reading. Gerald's nan says children didn't turn up to his party because Gerald is "different".

Gerald's Nan posted on Facebook how upset she was and within days thousands of presents and cards arrived from all over the world for Gerald, The Chicago Eagles asked Gerald to meet them after a game.

Gerald took some of the toys he got to a special needs class at his school and also gave some to the hospital where he has operations.

What's happening in the picture?

Explain the photo

- Why do you think Gerald was left out?
- Would that happen in our school? How do you know?
- What do the thousands of cards and presents show us about people around the world today?
- Some schools don't have the message, "No Outsiders" and some children don't understand what it means. If people don't know about the No Outsiders message, what do we have to do?
- If you could get a message to Gerald, what would you say?
- If you could get a message to Gerald's school, what would you say?

A restaurant in Alberta, Canada is giving free meals to anyone in need. The owner, Parkash Chhiber, has been giving food away for two years. He says giving food away is not costing anything because he usually has something to spare; "I always say the front door is for paying my bills and the back door is for something personal"

Parkash lost his job in 1992 following a road accident and he says, "I know the pain of not having food." He says when he had no money he visited his friends and they would give him meals. Today he owns his own restaurant, Indian Fusion.

What's the picture of?
Where do you think it is?

Explain the picture

- Why has Parkash decided to give away free food?
- Does Parkash care who he gives food to? Does he care about faith or race or disability? Is everyone welcome? Why?
- What does this say about people around the world?
- What can we learn from this example?

Singer Bryan Adams cancelled a concert in Mississippi, North Carolina, USA, because of a law they passed this week which allows discrimination against LGBT people. The law says that businesses or churches can refuse to serve gay or lesbian people and also discriminates against people who are transgender.

Bryan Adams made a statement, saying he, "Could not, in good conscience, perform in a state where certain people are being denied their rights due to their sexual orientation". He says he found it, "Incomprehensible that LGBT citizens are bring discriminated against... hopefully Mississippi will right itself and I can come back and perform to all of my may fans."

Singer Bruce Springsteen also cancelled a concert in Mississippi this week to show his opposition to the new law.

Who is the person in the picture? What do you think is their job?

- What does Bryan Adams hope to achieve?
- We know that around the world not everyone agree's with No Outsiders but here in the UK we have laws that support it; what law in the UK means LGBT people cannot face discrimination (the Equality Act 2010)
